As warehouse automation projects grow in scale and complexity, suppliers are increasingly creating environments where customers can evaluate complete systems before making major capital investment decisions.
Dematic has adopted that approach with the opening of a nearly US$50 million Solutions Center at its Americas headquarters in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The company said the facility spans nearly 40,000 square feet and provides a permanent demonstration environment for customer evaluation, testing and training.
Rather than showcasing individual products, the centre demonstrates complete warehouse workflows. Customers can see autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), goods-to-person systems, robotic piece picking, robotic palletising, warehouse management software and connected fulfilment processes operating together as an integrated system.
The approach reflects growing interest in understanding how software, robotics and material handling equipment work together before committing to large-scale automation projects. Demonstration facilities give prospective users an opportunity to evaluate system integration and operational workflows in a realistic warehouse setting.
Dematic said the Solutions Center is the first integrated warehouse automation showcase of its kind in North America, a claim made by the company. President Mike Larsson said the investment is intended to help customers make more informed automation decisions by allowing them to experience technologies operating together in realistic operating scenarios.
The facility also reinforces Grand Rapids’ role as one of Dematic’s principal engineering and customer engagement hubs in North America. According to the company, Dematic, part of the KION Group, employs approximately 1,500 people in Michigan and more than 4,000 across the United States.
In addition to physical automation systems, the Solutions Center incorporates software, analytics and lifecycle services. Senior Vice President Chris Steiner said the objective is to demonstrate robotics, software and AI-driven operational insights within a connected warehouse environment rather than as standalone technologies.
The opening also included a workforce development initiative. Dematic announced a US$150,000 donation to FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), bringing its contributions to the STEM education organisation to nearly US$500,000 over the past seven years, according to the company.
The announcement did not disclose the facility’s expected annual visitor numbers, construction timeline, operating costs or future expansion plans. Nor did it identify specific customer projects that will be evaluated at the centre.
The investment reflects Dematic’s focus on helping customers assess integrated warehouse operations before making automation decisions. Rather than serving as a traditional product showroom, the Solutions Center is designed to demonstrate how multiple technologies can operate together within a functioning fulfilment environment.
